Tearfund is an evangelical Christian development and relief organisation. It was established in 1968 to enable churches in the United Kingdom and Ireland to respond to the needs of the poor around the world.
Since then it has grown to be an organisation which works with partner groups in over 90 countries focussing on long term development projects and responding to disaster and famine situations. Tearfund also has a trading branch, Tearcraft, which markets products made by producer groups around the world.
The purpose of Tearfund is to serve Jesus Christ by enabling those who share evangelical beliefs to bring good news to the poor. The people Tearfund are trying to help belong to all faiths and none.
Tearfund’s role can be summed up as follows:
- Proclaiming and demonstrating the gospel for the whole person through support of Christian development and relief
- Working through a worldwide network of evangelical Christian partners
- Encouraging partnership in prayer and support from Christians in Britain and Ireland
- Seeking at all times to be obedient to biblical teaching
